Eating Out in Galway, Ireland

Home to more cafés and restaurants per head than any other Irish city, you need never find yourself hungry during your trip to Galway. And, contrary to popular beliefs not everyone in the west of Ireland lives on a diet of potatoes and other delights such as Irish Stew or Bacon and Cabbage. Of course if you wish to sample these and other traditional Irish delicacies you will certainly find numerous establishments which serve them. But, Galway’s vast selection of eateries cater for all tastes and budgets making eating out both a relaxed and extremely satisfying affair.

With a harbour located right in the heart of the city, you can rest assured that the seafood served in Galway restaurants is among the best in the world. Many agree that the oysters are the best, so much so that the natives have dedicated an entire festival to this particular shellfish. But, along with oysters you can sample fresh Atlantic salmon, lobster, scallops and mussels as well as much more. And, because the produce is so readily available it is much cheaper than it if you were to travel to inland Irish regions, and much fresher.

As well as seafood there are also a host of other ingredients which arrive fresh in the kitchens of Galway restaurants on a daily basis from the city’s hinterland. Connemara lamb is another favourite among visitors as are the usual Irish favourites - home baked brown bread, potato dishes of every variety, full breakfasts with the best of the city’s pork produce and other such dishes.

Finally, as well as native Irish cuisine the city is also home to establishments serving cuisine types from all over the world. And, a quite unusual concept has developed in Galway taking the form of restaurants which serve a little bit of everything. For example you could see Irish Stew, Satay Chicken, Spicy Beef Enchiladas and Spaghetti Bolognese on the same menu in any one restaurant. This proves very useful when a large number are dining out but can’t decide on exactly what type of restaurant to choose in order to please everyone.
